Protect Yourself From Scam Artists

There are always scams and bad people out there looking to find a way to steal your information and your money. There is no circumstance when a Comala employee will call you to ask for your member number. These are some of the latest ways we have heard they are using.

  • Some of our members have notified us that they have received letters from a company claiming to be “FIA CARD SERVICES™.” It claims to be an “Important Notice of Change in Terms for your Credit Card Agreement". This is not a valid letter from Comala Credit Union or any of our affiliated card processors. If you have responded to the address provided in the letter, please notify Comala immediately! You will also need to notify VISA at 800-325-3678.
  • We've also heard from members who have received telephone calls from an individual posing as an employee of Comala Credit Union. They say they need to verify your member number. Again, No Comala employee will ever do this. If you have received one of these phone calls and released any of your confidential information, please call us at 834-4494 immediately so we can flag your account. If you are ever in doubt about someone's identity, tell that person you will call him or her back, then dial the number in the phone book for the Comala branch.
  • The Credit Union National Association, CUNA, has alerted us of new phishing e-mails that are circulating (phishing is the practice of sending out emails asking for confidential information, and hoping that someone will give away their private data), using their name or logo. These e-mails request consumers to call a phone number or click a link due to a compromise of a credit card account. You should not respond to this message.
The Credit Union National Association is the trade association for credit unions in the US. CUNA does not maintain any type of customer/member financial information. Additionally, your financial institution would never request personal identification information over the phone via an e-mail solicitation. If you did respond to this or similar e-mails, you should contact your financial institution directly using the local phone number provided by your financial institution.
  • Sweepstakes Scams - You might receive a notification that you have won a large sum of money, but in order to claim this prize you must wire a certain amount of money to the company. Prizes in legitimate contests are awarded solely by chance, and contestants do not have to pay a fee or buy something to increase their odds of winning. In fraudulent schemes, however, "winners" almost always have to dip into their pockets to enter a contest or collect their prize. Don't fall for this.

A good place to learn more about how these type of scams works is by following this link, www.fakechecks.org which has some very good scam scenarios you can review and learn from. Please handle your personal financial information with extra caution, and if you are ever in doubt, don't hesitate to call one of the helpful Comala Credit Union employees you already know. We'll be glad to help. Another great site to visit is Alabama Attorney General Troy King's website. This has the latest in consumer alerts, and more tips to protect yourself from becoming the victim of a scam.
